APMEX Precious Metals: A Transaction Due-Diligence Checklist
Before an APMEX purchase, compare spot price, premium, spread, product type, payment, shipping, storage, resale, and risk.
APMEX sells bullion, coins, collectibles, and related services. A physical-metal transaction includes more than the quoted metal price: product premium, payment method, shipping, insurance, tax, storage, verification, and eventual resale all affect the outcome.
This direct guide is intentionally noindex. Quatre Tech does not recommend an allocation, predict metal prices, or endorse a product as an investment. For material financial decisions, use qualified independent professionals.
Who this may suit
Adults who independently decided to research a physical-metal purchase and want a disciplined checklist for price, authenticity, custody, and exit costs.
Quatre Tech perspective
Calculate the round trip before ordering. Compare total purchase cost with a realistic dealer buyback quote and all fees, not with spot price alone or a hypothetical future gain.

Review APMEX products and terms →What to compare before you buy
- Bullion versus collectible purpose, weight, fineness, and condition
- Live spot reference, unit premium, payment discount, tax, and shipping
- Dealer sell price versus current buyback price and spread
- Delivery, insurance, signature, storage, documentation, liquidity, and fraud risk
Separate metal value from product premium
Record weight, purity, live spot reference, and total price for the exact quantity. Divide the complete delivered cost by metal weight, then compare equivalent products. A collectible premium may depend on scarcity, grade, and demand rather than metal content.
Prices can move while an order is being placed. Read the binding-order, cancellation, payment, and market-loss terms before confirming. Do not assume an ordinary retail return process applies to a market-priced transaction.
Plan custody and exit before entry
Decide how delivery will be received, documented, insured, stored, and later authenticated. Keep invoices, packaging, serial information, and photographs where appropriate without exposing security details.
Request and compare current buyback quotes. CFTC and FINRA warn that dealer spreads, markups, commissions, storage fees, and high-pressure claims can materially erode value. Investigate the seller and never move retirement assets based only on a sales pitch.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Define whether the purpose is bullion or collecting.
- Calculate delivered cost per unit of metal.
- Compare live dealer buyback and the full spread.
- Read payment, cancellation, shipping, insurance, and return terms.
- Plan secure custody, records, and an independent exit path.
